On most Southern Utah bucket lists, you’ll find the one-two punch of Peek-a-Boo and Spooky Slot Canyons. These magnificent hikes, located in the Dry Fork area of the Grand Staircase-Escalante area, can be done individually, but they make for a killer loop. Once you’re in, all you have to do is walk through a paradise of red and purple rock.

In fact the button in the back of.

Peekaboo has a short, peekaboo and spooky slots climb up into the entrance - going down would have been much more difficult and an easy way to slip.
The rock obstruction in Spooky was easy to climb down with someone helping at the bottom.
I think it would have been difficult to get up the first section of the rocks if climbing up.
Watch carefully for cairns rocks piled in stacks to mark trail between Peekaboo and Spooky.
We accidentally got off the trail, but just backtracked and went to high ground to get our bearings.
Warning about Spooky: While I thoroughly loved hiking Spooky, one of the members of our group was a little claustrophobic and weighs about 250 lbs.
She pushed and squeezed her way through but it was really difficult for her.
The most difficult issue was her being large busted - at one section she passed through on her knees to access a slightly wider gap.
She says she's glad she did it, but probably wouldn't do it again.

The usual, but important - wear sunscreen and decent shoes, bring water.
If you are not confident about where you are going, wait for another group or backtrack.
Five of us shared two 2 liter camel packs of water and had extra - If it had been hot this would not have been enough!!
We also highly recommend stopping at Devils Garden.
We all had fun climbing on and taking photos on the rock arches.
The rocks and arches are immediately accessible from the parking lot.

Did it with five kids and a baby.
We went in Peekaboo and out Spooky.
A ~14 ft down climb at an obstruction turned part of our group back in Spooky.
The others reported that the gulch became VERY narrow - if you're not in the small to average size range, it could be a big peekaboo and spooky slots />Quiet, lone beautiful hike that was perfect for looking inward as I took in the beauty of the desert.
I learned, you're never alone in the desert, you become part of it.
Peekaboo used to be unknown and cool.
Now its crowded with families who bring dogs, babies and people who are not physically able to fit through the slot for various reasons.
This is particularly true on weekends and during Slot and wing hobbies />There is nothing from the BLM to say where to go, how much you can weigh, or which place to start so there are lots of traffic jams.
It was a mess.
I recommend that you go UP Spooky, cross over and go DOWN Peekaboo.
But be prepared for traffic jams regardless.

If you are anywhere near Escalante in the spring it’s worth spending a half day at the Peekaboo / Spooky hike. It was an awesome slot canyon to hike through. Read all the details carefully (maybe in AllTrails) and know that it is really not...

The start of the trail was wide open but soon after, it was so quiet and serene as you followed the path leading to the slots. When we made it to Peekaboo, there was a large group making a lot of noise, and we could see two women holding ropes for others to climb up the initial 15 feet.

Be aware, Spooky gets very narrow, so if you're larger, just be prepared. A larger member of our party had to crouch low to get through in some places, while we did see some others turn around. Peek-a-boo is much wider, and very beautiful, so if you need to you can go up and back in that one. We went up Spooky and down peek-a-boo, which was great!

You'll be hiking in the desert to get to some beautiful slot canyons.
These canyons beg for their pictures to are cruise ship casino taxes and fees are taken, so don't forget the camera.
Besides beauty, the canyons are obviously located in the desert.
Make sure to bring plenty of water and food.
This hike may not be comfortable for claustrophobic or heavy people.
Both canyons get very narrow but Spooky, in particular, might make you suck it in a lot!
Need to Know Pay attention to the cairns.
Bring plenty of water.
Heavy people might not be able to make it through Spooky.
Directions: From the junction of Highway 12 and 24 near Torrey, UT, head south on Highway 12 for 58 miles.
Turn left on Hole in the Rock Rd BLM 200 and continue on Hole in the Rock Rd for 25.
Turn left on BLM 252 and continue to trailhead head parking lot.
Description From the parking lot, head down the slick rock.
Follow the cairns until you end up at the mouth of Peek-A-Boo you'll see a larger slot canyon before Peek-A-Boo.
You can identify Peek-A-Boo by the stacked rocks and the hand and footholds carved into the sandstone in order to climb peekaboo and spooky slots into the canyon.
Enjoy the journey through Peek-A-Boo.
Once you exit Peek-A-Boo, again, follow the cairns east where you'll eventually make your way into a large wash.
The wash and cairns will lead you to the mouth of Spooky.
Follow spooky through and enjoy!
Note, Spooky gets REALLY tight.
After exiting Spooky look for the cairn that will be straight ahead don't go right like I did.
You'll continue straight across the wash and make your way back to Peek-A-Boo and then back to the parking lot.
In spooky gulch there is a drop of 6+ feet - look for a red rope to help.
Otherwise you'll need some assistance.
Go counter clockwise for the most challenging experience.
I got spooked cause of all the people going both ways into slot.
Up Peek-a-boo and down the choke-stone it gets harder to navigate every year to descend Spooky.
Ascending chockstone was challenging; good climbing skills required!

Spooky and Peekaboo Gulches, Hole in the Rock road, Escalante: Details: These two became more-less a tourist attraction, thanks to their proximity to the trailhead, relatively short stretch and only a few climbing obstacles. Spooky can get pretty tight, which my dad witnessed firsthand - he did not get through.

The highlights of Peekaboo Gulch are the double arch near the beginning of the canyon and the beautifully colored canyon walls on display near the end of the 1st narrows. After hiking Peekaboo, we journeyed cross-country over to the mouth of Spooky. Spooky Gulch was a much different canyon.

Spooky Gulch is a short slot canyon hike in the Grand Staircase-Escalante area, located on the Hole-in-the-Rock Road, 26 miles south of the town of Escalante.
